The book: Co-parenting with a Toxic Ex

Co-parenting with a Toxic Ex: What to Do When Your Ex-Spouse Tries to Turn the Kids Against You is by Amy J. L. Baker, PhD, a researcher who has spent years studying parental alienation, and Paul R. Fine, LCSW. It is written for the parent whose child is being pulled away from them, and most of the book is about what that parent can do.

We read it for the moves you can make yourself: how to respond when your child pushes you away, how to avoid answering badmouthing with badmouthing, and how to stay present for your kids. That work connects directly to ROOTS™ (Regular Opportunities Of Togetherness for Stability), the fourth move of our 4-Move Change Model™, which runs through our 1-to-1 coaching and the 6-Week High Conflict Co-Parenting Skills Intensive.

Custody questions and safety concerns go to the right professionals, and your attorney decides legal strategy.

What we will cover on November 11

If you are short on time, read the chapters that fit your situation. If you have not started the book, come anyway.
  • How to respond when your child pushes you away
  • Why answering badmouthing with badmouthing backfires, and what to do instead
  • Staying present and steady with your kids during a hard stretch
  • One thing you will do differently with your kids this week
  • Closing with ROOTS: regular time together that helps your kids feel stable
  • Live Q&A on real situations you bring to the session

Book Club questions

The High Conflict Resolutions Book Club is a free monthly Zoom book club for parents dealing with high-conflict co-parenting, hosted by Coach Brittany.

Is the co-parenting book club really free?

Yes. Book Club is free and open to anyone through December 2026. On January 1, 2027, it moves inside our Solid Ground community for members only.

Do I have to finish Co-parenting with a Toxic Ex before the session?

No. If you are short on time, read the chapters that fit your situation. You are welcome even if you have not started the book and just want to listen.

What can I do if my ex is turning the kids against me?

The book focuses on what you can control: how you respond when your child pushes you away, how to avoid answering badmouthing with badmouthing, and how to stay present with your kids. In the session, Coach Brittany keeps the conversation on what you will do differently with your kids this week. For custody questions or safety concerns, talk with your attorney.

How do I stop reacting to my co-parent's messages?

Pause before you answer. Regulate, the first move of our 4-Move Change Model, is about settling your nervous system before you respond. For help with the reply itself, our SAFE™ Ghostwriting program works with you as your communication partner.

Will other people see my name on the Zoom call?

You can change your Zoom display name to your first name or an alias. Click Participants, hover over your name, click More, then Rename.
